I wanted to take a moment to give respect to my grandfather. He passed away six years ago, but his memory is strong within.

As I type this my grandmother is over for a visit and we viewed some very old photos I had never seen. Though I reflect on him a lot, tonight with the photos fresh in the brain stem it’s all more so.

If there is one major character impression I could give of G’pa is that he was an unapologetic intellectual. He’d fight verbally, untill hoarse in the throat as to why his opinions are valid. A George Carlin if you will without the punch lines. If there is one thing he couldn’t stand was the bastardation of art of any venue. He’d tell me the best damn trick he ever saw was that guy that would smoke his thumb. He’d say the best damn composer was Beethoven. He’d say if you didn’t understand the humor of Victor Borge you were impotent to comedy genious. A savage in following trends.

Grandpa kicked some serious ass. He always had the knowlege to back his fight and or opinion. While some would say rigging your car with a heating stove, with a pipe coming out the side was dumb move, he’d validate as to why he did it, and the portal hole drilled next to it in the same breath. While some would laugh at making a boat in your backyard from scratch, he’d show you the newspaper article written about it, and how much money he made catching salmon in her.

He wrote enough poetry to fill two or three books worth before his death. I must say near every topic one can think about as a root in life, he made a poem about. Some horribly brash, some as light as air.

With that, I had based the title of this blog. It was indeed as it seemed. Most of my influence for the most part are passed away magi. More importantly it was in mind of my passed grandfather. Rarely apologizing, never censoring himself to whatever he liked or disliked. Damned be the mold of any unwritten bullshit code you can’t “say that”.

Thus was the inspiration of the title…..and I must say I loved every minute of posting here. Call it inovative to just be your fucking self on a “magic” blog. The only sin I made was choosing an art I love where it’s rare to use proper names and why I would feel one way or another as per effects or the person themselves. We all should be hard pressed to imagine any other performance art in which open opinion is so fround apon. Hell, we had one guy go militant spy hunter for someone posting funny pictures. Ellis even felt the need to post the home city of a commentor using a handle. Hopefully these types will cool out and realize few to none are impressed, and these guys are fairly scary to automatically revert to such tactics.

“You shouldn’t say that”. Well fuck em. I did. Too bad the first thing you slimy pricks thought of was to try and find personal information to make examples of “because they don’t like you”.

Thought I’d end in a familiar tone (heh).

In the end we only have our presant and future to whatever extent. Do things that make sense to yourself. There are no rules in magic. There are no rules in writing a journal blog. Give the longest finger you have an extension to others that say otherwise. Grandpa would have confirmed it so

Last night was gang busters. The post below was rather odd eh. What was going on at the time was, I went out alone, a rarity as of late. Just to have some fun and get rid of some cob webs. The place I went to, I hadn’t visited in about 2 months. Apon arrival I didn’t know anyone other than the bartender. Ah fuck. It’s weird being alone at a table sometimes. I began to realize that parts of myself were being drained slowly. As to say items in your life can get so in the way you near forget who you are at the core. Damn emotional vampires from the outside effect the inside.

I had somewhat if a revival at that table with only a vodka tonic sitting there by it’s lonesome. As fate would have it the owner was happy to see me again and gave me a nice on the house tab. It wasn’t about the booze but the context of the gesture. Things were looking up.

From 0 to 60 in .5 seconds I knew I had to fucking move and get out of that one man table. Randomly I just sat at another table without permission of three women, one guy. Don’t try this at home….er….you know what I mean. Sparked up some convo and brought out the Tally Ho.

This isn’t really a ploy as it may seem. I noodle with cards a lot. I don’t much care where or the circumstances. To me there is no great way to say “wanna see a card trick”. People have even written full literature on the subject, but to me it’s awkward to ask…. Much more than the odd guy that is flipping cards around under the table. Obviously they will/should ask. It actually has a nice flow if you look at it correctly. It’s all back to the “why people like my magic post”. I kinda hit on that.

I’m glad to say I practiced what I preach. One girl said “that’s hot” after a short effect. In her eyes I became hot. I hit on this in the past. The actual effect is just the receipt. It’s the performer that should be the real purchase. Is the song good, or is the band good? Is the actor intriguing on film, but more so in the true life stories?

One woman as I stated last night was nibbling and tounging on me real time, while I tried to do an effect or two more. No you sour bastards, she wasn’t a drunken bar whore. Just a little….lonley if you will. A few others joined in and something happened that I miss. The zone. That weird fucking thing where time seems to slow and everything is going perfectly….more so than normal.

The point. Well. I was losing my old self to a degree. Really I just reverted a few notches, in my mind to the pure and raw form I was used to once. People in our lives can get us down and make us forget our roots. Emotional vampires. I suppose it was a matter of feeling free of bullshit. That may seem unrelated to magic, but as I see it it’s important. I could have sat at that table with the lonley vodka and tonic scoping the nature of being alone at a bar. Instead I met new people and put on a good show. It goes back to the local fame thing. It’s strange perhaps the things I’m open about here. The whole thing is just a random journal in essence, usually typed with two fingers. But it should be somewhat obvious that local fame is very real. Why some think it’s important to be infront of a camera, or the need to reach beyond your own area as the basics of fame, I’ll never understand. One can feel a real time challenge when you define local fame, without asking or being try hard about it. It just happens and falls together that way.

Its just a matter of freedom to a degree. The zone is a good place to be. I just made a rhyme.

I also repeated and and that’s ok Bobby Flay.

I just viewed Jason Randal on the Late Show. It seems most I talked to disliked it, so I finally saw myself.

Honestly I thought he did a pretty fair job. It was all fairly fun to watch being key.

The sleeve isn’t my style at all and I enjoyed David playfully calling him out on it. To be honest I don’t own those gizmos, but David was just pointing the obvious. Those sleeves remind of those “changing picture” stickers we got as kids in Cracker Jack and shit. It is what it is…..and few to none will question the sleeve isn’t funky…..thus not my style. He covered a fun heckle well and moved on.

Second routine was fun, and I give Jason kudos for understanding what should work well on TV in both. A bit of a flash I’d assume is why I saw so many negitive statements today. My man should have been standing in my opinion. I think it’s important to be open in posture for routines of such, instead of having to do the crunch.

Anyway. I thought it was amusing and far from bad as I expected in reading others comments.

I try to at least take a little something along as per myself when watching TV appearances. First that came to mind is revoking the magician goofed plot when you are announced as Jason was, or if you do ineed “have a name” for yourself beforehand to your spectators. David again calling him out was pretty damn funny. That’s the true luxory I like the most of introducing myself as a dabbler in mannerisms with cards. People will usually truly beleive you are nervous, or non-versed and made a mistake. Personally with such I open with the most daring, shall we say hardest routine and work downward. Chances are fair people ask for the “hardest” item I know, which in reality may be damn near self working. This simple form has always produced much better reactions, than if it were plotted vice versa. I know that his mistake plot was open, but it all somewhat rubbed me wrong as an excuse in the end to go from x to y.

I thought it was fine work, and credit Jason for not having a try hard attitude of being hip, cool, and will just “blow your mind” like many tend to do on TV.

Normally I read a couple lines of this kind of comment and just hit the spam button. For some odd reason I decided to actually read this one (after hitting the spam button) and got a nice chuckle with my morning coffee. You should have seen the comment his daughter wrote! Though, as a good deed I never let it be seen as per the request of mommy.

In all seriousness these comments are usually not read by me other than the first line or two and tossed in the trash. It’s your life and time.

Are you guys fucking serious??? You’re making fun of a man that believes in God and was trying to start performing/selling magic!? You have to start from somewhere you idiot fucks, You can’t be perfect from the jump! I’m sure you all you dumb fucks that started magic, weren’t professionals overnight. If you want to try to humiliate Cory, you’ll have to do a lot better than that guys. He’s learning just like everyone else did trying to come into this magic shit. I’m glad you guys took the time to pick out every little bad thing you could think of and put it on a page, that’s pretttttttty classic.. Did you get a degree in being a fucking chump? Grow the fuck up guys, and back off Cory. Unlike you, he didn’t grow up as a fucking loser devoting every minute to magic, like you fuckin’ punks that probably didn’t get a piece of ass till you were 30 cause you were so obsessed with your card tricks! Sry guys but you guys seem like a bunch of little computer geeks that took too much time out of your life to pick on one person. You were probably the little nerdy fucks in school that we all use to make fun of! Here’s a little trick you can all do, it’s called Go FUCK yourself.. I’m sure you lacked many years of pussy and mastered it so you guys won’t need a DVD from me

Hype from Crushed:

This is absolutely the most imposible {sic} vannish {sic}to date!

The whole can completly {sic} vanishes, and you are completly {sic} naked!

I still stand behind my nut bar post. Cheers good buddy. Over and out.

I noticed a little debate over yonder about exposure. As always, the following is one man’s opinion, rather than an expression of a say all end all mind frame.

Exposure to me is very simple.

Exposure is when something that should be kept within a group of the same interest is instead transcribed in some form the general public can see… at it’s darkest without them “asking” in the first place.

As brainless as the above is, it really has more perplexity than perhaps the word deserves.

The best way possible to expose is using hype, promote and sell. Put a peso amount on the exposure product and it will mostly be accepted by the circle at large. Hell, I’ve seen clones of certain items go for months before anyone simply states historical data. Usually these items I’ve caught come from old monthly’s.

Anyway. The above is the hottest exposure on the scale. Yet usually not looked as such.

Second is the debate that brought about my humble post hither. Exposure not as a product for the circle, but just to expose for vanity, or a mind set that “magic is for everyone”. This can be from magi and laymen alike. I doubt many of the large stage illusions exposed came from magi, but laymen as a problem solving task, which may link with vanity.

With that I can’t much think of any other categories, unless we wanted to nit pick. No matter how one would try to convince me that DVDs etc are not as exposing as open videos online for the general public, it would be a losing battle to shift my opinion.

Exposure does not, and will not ever effect me. Isn’t that the point of being a prime magician? At absolute worst the most exposed move or gadget is a small gamble a laymen will call one out. 99 percent of the folks your going to meet casually have never seen a decent card effect, much less research on our most basic 101.

To a degree the whole time I’ve been leading to a purist state of mind. I like and respect the gaffers. But it is all at your own risk. A purist’s only true risk is flashing or lack of analization on angles with poor execution. We should always be aware that even online magic shops show items in the wide open for sale.

We like to think in life certain things are sacred. But the nature of reality is that nothing is sacred unless one makes it so. We can’t be surprised when others take what we look upon as sacred as a nothing.

Point is, in a way I care, but I refuse to let things effect me, unless I allow it to. My chances are near 100 percent exposure will not effect me being I don’t allow for over use of anything, much less some item that can be called out or lack of understanding to what and how I’m using my resources of knowledge.

Exposure sucks. But if it’s effecting you personally it may be time to go back to the drawing board. If one shows a coin, clutches, and in relaxation a different coin is seen, and someone expresses something verbally, that’s just…..too bad for that guy. If you can’t allow inspection most of the time, your in a world that frankly I want no part of. Should we blame exposure? A loose lipped magi? A laymen with problem solving skills stating the obvious? I’m really not sure. The only thing I know is it doesn’t effect me personally on any level when I perform.

Purist is not an elitist term. Just a frame of mind. Which extends over gaffs themselves and more about end results with little to no explanation, even if the explanation is all over the web, or some “hot” product. At least for me anyway. I’d even say, though against the grain, if you use a “special” something and are always prepared to be called out, and in the end, all is as it should be, at heart your a purist.

Best rule as always. If you want to keep a secret, put it in a book. The best usually have boring names, few pictures, and are from someone that is less of a salesman and more of an enigma.

Enjoy the confusion. It’s the chaos that’s amusing. If you function as if you have no problems in exposure…..you don’t have any problems.
